Tropical Depression 19 is currently expected to strengthen into a tropical storm and make landfall near the border of Louisiana and Mississippi.

Much like the year that contains it, the 2020 hurricane season refuses to let up.

Yet another tropical depression has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and could make landfall in Louisiana as a tropical storm, according to the latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The center of Tropical Depression 19 is currently located between the Bahamas and Southeast Florida. It’s currently forecast to remain a depression as it moves over Florida, before reemerging in the Gulf and strengthening “to near-hurricane intensity,” but remaining a tropical storm.

The most recent forecast from the NHC shows the system making landfall near the Louisiana-Mississippi state line as early as Tuesday afternoon.

The next available storm name is Sally.

Storm surge, wind and heavy rainfall will be possible from the Florida panhandle to southeast Louisiana this weekend and early next week, according to the NHC.

The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans said in a statement Friday afternoon that it would be “closely monitoring” the tropical weather over the next several days. The utility expects to have 98 of 99 drainage pumps operational ahead of any possible heavy rain.
